When I was a teenager, my family belonged to a church that didn't sanction dancing. When we had teen socials, we always ended up sitting around and singing. It was great fun! We sang old favorites like "You Are My Sunshine" and sixties tunes like "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore" and "If I Had a Hammer." There is incredible joy in singing, as you say, without audition, rehearsal or performance. About the only time we do it in our culture is Christmas. I definitely think we need to extend the tradition to other times of the year. I love the idea of Womansong Circles!
