Nurturing the Mother-Daughter Relationship: A Yoga and Communication Retreat

My daughter and I have always valued our relationship and our communication is an important component. Although we share similar values, interests, and temperaments, we don’t always agree on issues because of our different perspectives. But we do agree that we want love, understanding, and respect from each other.

When she became a mother in 2003 and made me a grandmother, our communication took on greater importance and frequency. Our time together increased, and with so many new experiences facing us in our new roles, we often felt the tension mounting between us. But we always persevered and worked through our disagreements.

We consider our relationship a work in progress and are always looking for ways to nurture it. My daughter is a psychotherapist and has taught me some great communication tools: reflective listening, validating, and empathizing. Putting these techniques into practice has worked wonders for our relationship. We’ve learned how to understand each other’s perspectives and respect each other’s choices.

We are sharing what we’ve learned about communication in a daylong retreat on Saturday, June 11 at the Stillheart Institute in Woodside, California. Nurturing the Mother/Daughter Relationship: A Yoga and Communication Retreat will consist of gentle yoga with Jackie Long and a communication seminar with my daughter, Deborah Davis, and me.

There will be some unstructured time to soak in the hot tub, take a dip in the pool, hike in the gorgeous Redwoods that surround Stillheart, or curl up on the couch and read a book in the library. Catered meals for lunch and dinner will be provided.

The retreat is for mothers, mothers-in-law, and adult daughters or daughters-in-law (ages 18 and older) interested in exploring their mother-daughter relationship, whether they come alone or with their mother or daughter. The cost is $150 per person. To register, please email Jackie Long at jackie@yogawithlove.com.
