I've given him all the philosophical reasons why losing isn't all bad, but he still just can't handle it. I think it's an ego thing. A loss is a blow to his ego, and his ego is fragile for some reason. He ends up refusing to play games or participate in sports because he can't stand doing anything unless he's going to win.
