I don't really meditate, although my yoga class does give me a similar chance to concentrate on living in the moment. Working on a pose while remembering my breathing makes it impossible to think about other concerns.

I had six of my seven grandchildren this weekend, and we had a few moments of pure chaos, and some of pure Zen. They went on a treasure hunt that ended with a barrel of water balloons, and that was pure joy. We threw the water balloons at the house and not at each other, but we still got a little wet. But it was still an hour of carefree frolicking.

This sounds like a really family-friendly event. I wish I were on the West Coast so my grandchildren and I could participate. They are very into animals. Yesterday we went for a walk along a bayou, and one of them said, "I see an otter!" Now we don't have otters on our bayous, but I was tickled that they knew about otters and knew that they live near the water.

I love the idea of Womansong Circles! When I was a teenager, my family belonged to a church that didn't sanction dancing. When we had teen socials, we always ended up sitting around and singing. It was great fun! We sang old favorites like "You Are My Sunshine" and sixties tunes like "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore" and "If I Had a Hammer." There is incredible joy in singing, as you say, without audition, rehearsal or performance. About the only time we do it in our culture is Christmas. I definitely think we need to extend the tradition to other times of the year.
