Today’s post is an important milestone for me—it’s my 100th post. With Thanksgiving this week I want to express my gratitude to all of you readers, especially you grandmas who’ve enriched my life by sharing your blogs, books, and comments with me.

It seems fitting that for my 100th post I share a book that has hundreds of fun, low-cost activities for grandparents to share with their grandchildren whether they’re near or far. Grandloving: Making Memories with Your Grandchildren is written by a grandmother, Sue Johnson, and her daughter-in-law, Julie Carlson. This unique writing team knows first-hand the challenges of long-distance grandparenting. Sue and Julie have lived in different states since Julie’s three boys (now 15, 11 and 5) were born. Both Sue and Julie are former teachers and have included their favorite ideas in their book along with tips and activities (more…)

On Saturday, November 21 I’m giving a presentation, “Learn how to be a go-to grandparent whether you’re near or far,” at Temple Beth Am in Los Altos Hills, CA. I’ll be sharing three strategies for building lifelong meaningful relationships with our children and grandchildren. We’re meeting at 3 pm in the temple conference room. Everyone is welcome.

If you’re local, please join us for a lively discussion on the joys and challenges facing today’s grandparents. My presentation is based on the chapter I wrote for The Art of Grandparenting, “How to Become a Go-to Grandma.”

See the November 20 issue of j. weekly for an article about the GaGa Sisterhood and a mention about this presentation.

At our November GaGa Sisterhood meeting we engaged in a lively discussion about creativity. Members of the group shared some examples of transformative experiences they’ve had with their grandchildren. One grandma said that being with her grandchild energized her so completely that she became oblivious to everything else.  But she wondered out loud if this gets us in trouble with our children.

Another grandma said that not everyone is charmed by people who are always “on.” Sometimes we need to make space by “turning off” and not imposing our energy on everyone around us. (more…)
