Run for the Seals on March 13
05th March 2010
A friend who’s a race director sent me information about an upcoming event that sounds fun for grandparents and their grandchildren who live in the San Francisco Bay Area. If you want a spot of exercise and a chance to visit the Marine Mammal Center, check out the Run for the Seals on March 13, 2010 in Sausalito, CA.

This annual fun run/walk fundraiser starts at Rodeo Beach in the beautiful Marin Headlands and ends at Bunker Road near the Marine Mammal Center, a world-class rehabilitation hospital, research and education center. After more than 14,000 animal rescues over the past 30 years, the Center has a new location in Sausalito, where you can learn about marine mammals and the ocean.
This year’s race provides participants with two route options: a two-mile scenic walk or a four-mile race. After the event, all participants are invited to attend a “Fun Day” at The Marine Mammal Center, where you can enjoy complimentary food, drinks and tours, while learning about the important work of the Center. You’ll be able to see fur seals and seal lions and the gorgeous Ft. Cronkite natural area.
The event is open to all ages and is perfect for runners (casual and pro), families, walkers, ‘baby joggers’ and ‘power-strollers’. There will also be a costume contest and dogs on leashes are welcome too!

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs: The Movie
18th February 2010
Last year I wrote a post about the book, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. This 1978 classic by Judi and Ron Barrett holds up well for a new generation of readers. My son loved it when he was growing up and now my six year old granddaughter is a fan. When I first read it in the 80s, I never dreamed it would be a full-length feature film. And now it is. (more…)

Sausalito, CA: A Valentine’s Day Destination
16th February 2010
Lately I’ve taken to reading the San Jose Mercury News’ “Staycation Specials” in the travel section. [Staycation is a newly coined word for a period of time in which an individual or family stays home and relaxes or takes day trips from their home to area attractions.] Last month one of those headlines caught my eye:
The marriage deal
The longer you’ve been married, the more you’ll save on Valentine’s Day at Casa Madrona Hotel & Spa in Sausalito, CA. The “Sweetheart Deal” package offers couples a 1 percent discount off their stay for every year of their marriage. The special includes a rose, a bottle of champagne, chocolates, and a 30-minute massage in their spa.

Grandchildren Grow Up Too Quickly
05th February 2010
When my children were little, my mother-in-law always greeted them by saying “hey-yo” in this cute little baby voice. As they grew up, she continued her signature greeting despite their protests that they “weren’t babies any more.” At the time I didn’t understand why my mother-in-law hung onto her baby voice whenever she said hello. But now that I’m a grandma myself, I get it. Sometimes it’s hard to let go of the rituals we enjoyed when our grandchildren were little; we want to hold on to those precious connections, as if that will help stop time. (more…)
